You already know how easy it is to stay in touch with friends by using SMS, or as most of us call it, "texting". What you might not know is that SMS also gives you access to a world of information, like the latest football scores, or today's breaking news, or the weather forecast.

Services like Google® SMS, weather.com, and Twitter offer information tailored to your location and preferences. By simply texting short codes to the right number, you'll be able to find out... well, just about anything. And the best part? All of these services are free! To take advantage of everything that SMS has to offer, you'll first need to add the SMS feature to your account if you don't already have it (or if it's not included with your plan). Simply log in to your account and choose Add Features.

Google SMS

Google offers one of the most complete SMS information services available, with information available on a wide range of topics. It's simple and it's free! Just text one of the below keywords to 46645 (GOOGL), along with your zip code or city and state:

Google will then text you the information you're looking for. For example... send a text message to 46645 with "Weather 39157" in the body of the message. You'll immediately receive a text message with the current conditions and three-day forecast for that zip code.

Facebook

Chances are that you're already one of the millions of people who are "on Facebook". But you might not know that a lot of the things you do on Facebook can be done more quickly and easily via Facebook SMS.

A quick text message to 32665 (FBOOK) lets you update your status, search for friends or local events, or even look up a friend's cell phone number. Here's a list of some of the more commonly used commands:

[just type the text of your status update] msg john doe meet us at Cellular South search jane doe cell tom sawyer event wall huck finn happy birthday add becky thatcher

Facebook will reply back with the information, a confirmation, or a request for additional details. Send "add becky thatcher" and Facebook responds with a list of people with that name to pick from. In order to use the service you will need to enable your phone:

1) Log into your account on a computer


2) Go to the mobile tab (LINK: http://www.facebook.com/mobile/?account) under account settings. If you are not with Cellular South your carrier might not be listed in the dropdown list.

Twitter

Do you Tweet? Twitter, the social networking application that's taking the world by storm, is even better from your phone. If you are following your favorite band, celebrity, industry insider or TV show, nothing beats the experience of seeing it live as it happens on your phone.

To "follow" Cellular South's Twitter stream, text "Follow CellularSouth" to 40404.

You can use Twitter to update your to-do list with a cool feature called Remember The Milk. Using this service is as easy as writing a note. Remember the Milk understands your schedule and creates reminders based on plain language. For example, texting "pick up Jenny at the airport in two weeks" will set a reminder for two weeks from now to pick up Jenny at the airport.

Subscribe to your local forecast or get the forecast on demand from The Weather Channel.

To get the current conditions on demand:

Text your zip code to 78676. The weather forecast for your location will be sent to your phone.

You can also get pollen alerts, surf and sea conditions, and more. You can even set up an SMS subscription and receive forecast updates every day.
