Cellular South Launches Used Phone Drive To Benefit USA Children's and Women's Hospital

Mobile, AL, March 3, 2004 –Cellular South and the University of South Alabama Children’s and Women’s Hospital have joined forces to collect used wireless phones during the month of March with proceeds to benefit hospital programs.

Wireless phone users are encouraged to contribute phones to the effort by dropping them off at any Cellular South retail location in Mobile and Baldwin County and at Cellular South’s tent at the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival presented by Cellular South.

“We’re extremely pleased about our new partnership with Cellular South,” said Ann Cunningham, hospital associate director – development. “Without assistance from good corporate neighbors we wouldn’t be able to provide some of the worthwhile services that are so meaningful to chronically ill and hospitalized children in the Gulf Coast region. Seventy-five percent of all funds raised are used to purchase medical equipment, 15 percent used to fund services and programs, and ten percent to conduct research.”

The project is modeled after other wireless industry initiatives to recycle used phones. Manufacturers buy back the phones, providing a revenue source for associated charities.

"Cellular South prides itself on providing a different kind of wireless service based on the simple premise that customers have rights, including the right to a network that works, and service and pricing that is fair and makes sense," said Noel Coward, Cellular South area manager. "Our strong commitment to customers extends to the community we call home, and to vital organizations like USA Children's and Women's Hospital.”

"So many people have used phones just sitting in drawers at home," added Coward. "There are thousands of wireless users in Mobile and Baldwin County, so by Cellular South working together with customers of all of the wireless companies in our area, this used phone drive will make a great impact in funding some of the programs that the hospital provides to children in this area."

In addition to collecting used phones at all of Cellular South’s Alabama stores during the month of March, the company will be sponsoring the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival March 19-21 and will collect phones on-site during the festival.

There are five Cellular South locations in Mobile and Baldwin County: Airport Boulevard (next to Ethan Allen), Westwood Plaza at the corner of Airport and Schillenger, Tillman’s Corner at the corner of Highway 90 and Rangeline Road, plus locations in Daphne and Foley.

Mobile store hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Foley store hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cellular South retail locations are closed on Sundays.
