Cellular South Adds New Cell Sites, Extends Local Calling Area
Jackson, MS, March 26, 2004 – Cellular South, one of the nation's largest privately held wireless companies, announced today the addition of new cell sites in Kosciusko. The new cell sites are part of a $38 million investment in the expansion and upgrade of its third generation (3G) wireless network which includes an extended local calling area from Memphis and Mississippi through Coastal Alabama and Destin, Florida.
The company has invested more than $260 million in its infrastructure over the last five years to expand its coverage geographically, improve the quality of wireless service in existing areas - including enhancing call clarity and coverage inside buildings - and to increase call capacity. Cellular South's network features advanced Code-Division Multiple Access 1XRTT (CDMA 1X) technology, which allows the company to offer flat-rate calling plans with unlimited anytime minutes, while also serving as a platform for future non-voice products.
"We offer a different kind of wireless service based on the simple premise that people who live and work in this area have the right to a wireless network that works, and service and pricing that is fair and makes sense," said Shane Tuttle, Cellular South area manager. "We're very pleased to offer wireless service in Kosciusko for the first time."
Cellular South's flat rate calling plan has given its customers the freedom to use their phones without complicated bills or counting minutes. In addition, Cellular South customers have access to nationwide service when traveling outside their local coverage area and have the option to add roaming and long distance minutes as needed.
The company also offers the Lifeline Assistance program in this area. The program, available to qualifying subscribers living in Mississippi who receive income-based government benefits, is designed to assist those who cannot afford wireless phones.
"Telephone service has become an essential part of American life, but there's still a small segment of our population that cannot afford this basic service," said Tuttle. "With Lifeline, Cellular South can provide this assistance so that wireless service is available to all Mississippians."
