April 30, 2004 – Cellular South recently hosted a used cell phone drive for the March of Dimes to help save babies. Hundreds of used cell phones were donated at Cellular South locations in Bay St. Louis, Biloxi, Gulfport, Ocean Springs, Pascagoula and Wiggins. The March of Dimes Youth Council selected Cellular South as their partner for this project. The phones will be recycled through Recellular, Inc. of Michigan. The Mississippi Coast Division of March of Dimes will receive proceeds from the sale of the refurbished phones. "We were pleased to see the number of phones that our customers donated to assist the local March of Dimes," states Cellular South Area Manager Richard Reynolds. "Cellular South is a proud corporate partner of the March of Dimes and supports their efforts year-round."
The March of Dimes mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality through research, education, community programs and advocacy. Premature birth is the leading cause of newborn death. It affects more than 460,000 babies in the U.S. each year - that's 1,280 babies every day. It can result in lifelong consequences like blindness or mental retardation. The March of Dimes is working to find answers to what causes premature birth and how it can be prevented.
