Cellular South averaging more than 5 million minutes used per day in South Mississippi

JACKSON, Miss. - (September 4, 2005) – Cellular South’s Emergency Task Force continues to make significant progress in restoration of service throughout South Mississippi and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The company is also providing free local and long distance calls at evacuation shelters, disaster relief centers and Cellular South’s own retail locations and tents across the affected areas.

Latest Cellular South developments:

  • Cellular South is averaging more than 5 million minutes used per day in South Mississippi, with more than 1 million on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
  • Cellular South has activated more than 500 complimentary wireless phones for first responders and government officials.
  • Due to the impact of the hurricane on many Cellular South retail employees, the company has deployed relief teams to assist in opening stores and manning tents in the effected area. Free calls and cell phone charging facilities are being offered at the following locations on Monday.

  • Hurricane victims trying to reach family and friends can also make free calls from Cellular South phones at many Red Cross Shelters throughout Mississippi including:

    • Saucier: Saucier Elementary School

    • Hattiesburg: Forrest County Multipurpose Center, Oak Grove High School
  • Since the Hurricane hit, Cellular South has filled and transported truckloads of food, ice, bedding and personal essentials for Cellular South employees affected by the hurricane and Cellular South Emergency Task Force crews who are working around the clock to continue restoration of network capacity.
  • Many Cellular South employees, both technical and retail, have been working around the clock before, during and since the storm, so that we can service our customers and the community.
