Jackson-based wireless carrier to build 200 new cell sites in Mississippi this year
JACKSON, Miss. - (March 2, 2006) – Cellular South, the nation’s largest privately held wireless provider, will invest $78 million in Mississippi to add 200 new cell sites to its wireless network across the state in 2006.
“Cellular South’s current expansion will further increase capacity for voice and data usage and improve call quality inside buildings and homes,” said Hu Meena, company president. “This investment is part of our commitment to giving our customers anytime, anywhere coverage that’s strong at home and nationwide.”
Some new cell sites will be in rural, less-populated areas to boost service in parts of Mississippi often not served by other wireless providers.
The company’s 2006 investment in wireless infrastructure follows a similar $39 million project in 2005 that added 110 cell sites in the state. Since 1999, Cellular South has invested more than $400 million in its wireless network.
Adding capacity for voice and data usage is in part a response to the rapid adoption of Cellular South flat-rate calling plans including the new Nationwide Plus plan which features flat-rate unlimited home area and long distance calling, plus 750 nationwide minutes. In addition, Cellular South has experienced strong growth in new customers during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
